If children with autism do not learn to speak sufficiently, picture cards or visual symbols combined with spoken sounds can, according to the 2021 S3 guideline, support building communication. [1, Rec. 31] For non-speaking people from late primary school age, a picture card system or a device with speech output using visual symbols can be used. [1, Rec. 32]
The guideline advised against so-called “facilitated communication” because there is no evidence for it. [1, Rec. 35] The guideline expired on 23.03.2026. [2]
