Nachteilsausgleich (compensation for disadvantages)

Changes the conditions of an assessment (for example more time or a quiet room) without lowering the subject requirements. Who decides and what is needed is regulated by each federal state.

Also called
reasonable adjustments in school, Nachteilsausgleich in der Schule

A Nachteilsausgleich is meant to enable pupils with autism to show what they can actually do, without lowering the subject requirements. The conditions are changed, for example through more time, a quiet room or a different form of assessing performance.

In some federal states this has to be told apart from Notenschutz (grade protection), where certain performances are not graded. In Bavaria, the type and extent of Notenschutz must be noted on the school report. [1; 2]

Who decides and which documents are needed is regulated by each federal state itself. In Bavaria, depending on the type of school, the head teacher or the school authority decides, usually on application. [3]

Context: School law is state law. The information in the article refers to Bavaria; other federal states have different rules.
