An early-start programme for young children that, according to the 2021 S3 guideline, emphasises playful interaction and parent coaching. In one study, intelligence quotient and language improved after two years, but autism symptoms did not.

Also called
ESDM

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an early-start programme that the 2021 S3 guideline described alongside early intensive behavioural intervention (EIBI); it stressed that it additionally includes playful interaction and parent coaching. [1, Ch. C.4.2]

On its effect, the guideline reported: in one study, intelligence quotient and language improved after two years, but autism symptoms did not. [1, Ch. C.4.2.2] The studies partly had a high risk of bias. The guideline does not name a single programme as recommended, but features such as setting, duration and content. [1, Rec. 10]

The guideline expired on 23.03.2026; newer studies are not taken into account. [2] More: Behaviour-based early interventions and ABA.
