ABA (applied behaviour analysis)

Umbrella term for methods that build behaviour through reinforcement. Well known are early intensive programmes (EIBI) and play-based programmes such as ESDM; the evidence and experiences are assessed differently.

Abbreviation
ABA
Also called
applied behaviour analysis, EIBI

ABA stands for applied behaviour analysis. The 2021 S3 guideline on therapy described two programme types based on it: EIBI (early intensive behavioural intervention with a “discrete trial format”, 20 to 40 hours a week) and the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), which additionally emphasises playful interaction and parent guidance. [1, Ch. C.4.2] The studies partly had a high risk of bias. In small studies, adults report differently on ABA in childhood. The guideline has expired. [2]
