Screening

A quick, simple procedure that points to an increased risk of autism. A screening is not suitable for a diagnosis, but is an indication for further clarification.

Also called
screening procedure, screening questionnaire

Screening instruments serve the quick and simple identification of people with an increased risk of autism. They are not suitable for making a diagnosis, but are an indication for further clarification. Their specificity in the clinical context is low, so their benefit is limited. [1]

The diagnosis only arises from a thorough assessment with several sources of information, for example with ADOS-2 and ADI-R. [1]
