S3 guideline

The highest development level of medical guidelines in Germany. There are two S3 guidelines on autism (diagnosis and therapy); both have now expired.

Also called
guideline

In Germany there are two large S3 guidelines on autism: part 1 on diagnosis and part 2 on therapy. Both were developed in an interdisciplinary way and are intended for children, adolescents and adults. [1] The therapy guideline was completed in 2021; the overview of the lead professional society DGKJP gives its validity as “until 23.03.2026” (therapy) and “until 04.04.2021” (diagnosis). [2]

Both guidelines have therefore expired. Their contents do not automatically become wrong, but they no longer formally count as the current state of knowledge and are put in time context here.

  • Evidence

Evidence means scientific proof. How robust it is depends on the type of study, bias and the body of studies. No evidence does not mean ineffective.

  • Autism-specific therapy

Autism-specific therapy is not a single method: the 2021 S3 guideline sorted therapies by goal and recommended different services depending on age.
