Reduced earning capacity (Erwerbsminderung)

Legal term of pension insurance: anyone who, because of illness or disability, cannot work for an indefinite period for six hours a day counts as partially, under three hours as fully reduced in earning capacity.

Also called
full reduced earning capacity, partial reduced earning capacity

People insured are partially reduced in earning capacity if, because of illness or disability, they cannot work for at least six hours a day under the usual conditions of the general labour market for an indefinite period, and fully reduced if they cannot work for at least three hours a day. [1, Para. 1, 2] What matters is capacity in working life, not the diagnosis. Note: this is an assessment by the editorial team. Legal status: 10.10.2026; not legal advice.
