Care allowance (Pflegegeld)

Cash benefit from the care fund for care at home from care grade 2, if care is arranged by the person themselves, for example by relatives.

Also called
care allowance for self-arranged care help, § 37 SGB XI

People in need of care with care grades 2 to 5 can apply for a care allowance instead of home care help. The requirement is that, with the care allowance, within its scope, they ensure in a suitable way the necessary body-related care measures, care-related support measures and help with running the household themselves, for example through relatives. [1] The law also provides for counselling visits while care allowance is received. [1] The amount depends on the care grade; current amounts and further benefits are in the article Long-term care insurance benefits. A planned reform law is also mentioned there.

Legal status: 08.10.2026. This is not legal advice; in an individual case, counselling services or specialist lawyers for social law can help.
